Accidental bruises are rare in infants below 6 months of age. Inflicted bruises are more common over the face, ears, neck, genitalia, buttocks, upper arms, trunk and upper legs, whereas accidental trauma is more often located near bony prominences such as elbows, forehead, chin, shin, knees and ankles. The character of the bruise mark should be carefully noted as the injury caused by a slap, stick, cord, knife or a flat object may have distinct features. Bruises in different phases of healing could indicate repeated trauma. The likelihood of a bleeding or clotting disorder shouldalso be consideredin such cases.
