Usually even gross hematuria doesn’t result in significant blood loss, except in case of trauma. 1 ml of blood in 1000 ml urine is sufficient to cause red discoloration of urine.

Proteinuria up to 2+ on dipstick (100 mg/dl) may be due to hematuria and resolves with resolution of hematuria. Higher and persistent proteinuria suggests significant renal disease. Children with significant proteinuria need referral to a Pediatric Nephrologist.
