Celiac Disease is intolerance to the gliadin fraction of the protein gluten found in wheat, oats (in India) and barley. The affected child may present clinically with a very wide spectrum :-
- Classical presentation is generally gastrointestinal symptoms- intermittent abdominal pain, bloating, loose stools or constipation.
- Atypical presentation could be easy fatiguability and pale appearance (anemia) with no other clinical observations.
- Short stature and poor weight gain with no other signs and symptoms in an otherwise active child with no gastrointestinal manifestations is another atypical presentation.
There may be overlap of these clinical signs and symptoms in some patients.
