Hepatitis E is an infectious hepatitis, with a feco-oral route of transmission. Seroprevalance is <10% in children less than 10 years of age. Majority of the infection is subclinical as in the case of Hepatitis A. However Hepatitis E can be fatal during pregnancy causing fulminant hepatic failure and fetal transmission. A chronic carrier state is rare, but may exist in certain immunosuppressed solid organ transplant recipients.
