Hidden sugar is the added sugar in food that a person or consumer is unaware of. Everyone is aware that desserts have sugar but if the food label says “sugar free”, most of us would assume that the food is healthy and doesn’t have added sugar. A large number of food items sold as “sugar free” actually have some form of sugar, which has calories and affects the blood glucose level.
The common table sugar we consume is sucrose. Other natural sugars are fructose (present in fruits) and lactose (present in milk).
There are over 50-names for the different forms of sugar such as malt, brown sugar, dextrose, maltose, corn syrup etc. but most people do not realize that these are sugars that are as harmful as sucrose and they are adding empty (non nutritious) calories to a child’s diet.
