IgE antibody is a type of antibody, produced by plasma cells in human body. Its main function is immunity to parasites such as helminths. It has an important role in type 1 hypersensitivity (allergic disorders).

IgE levels are neither sensitive nor specific to diagnose or rule out allergic disorders. Raised levels of IgE may be possible in many other clinical conditions like Parasitic infestations, Hyper IgE syndrome, Job’s syndrome, Wiskott Aldrich Syndrome and Pulmonary Aspergillosis.

Total IgE levels as a diagnostic marker of allergic disease is the commonest misuse.
