HLAB27 is Human Leucocyte Antigen B27. It has a well known association with Enthesitis related arthritis (ERA). Enthesitis is inflammation at the sites of attachment of tendon and ligament to the bone. HLAB27 antigen may be found in 50-90 % of patients with ERA. However, 5% to 10% of the normal population is positive for HLA-B27. It is therefore, not a diagnostic test but rather an indicator of risk. For these reasons, HLA-B27 testing is useful only in patients with clinical manifestations that suggest a diagnosis of ERA.
It is measured by Flowcytometry and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). PCR is the gold standard method.
