About Author

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is characterized by chronic abdominal pain and changing bowel habits including frequency of defecation and stool consistency in the absence of any other pathology and the symptoms cannot be fully explained by another other medical condition.

IBS is a common problem in adults but in children it is less common. However, it affects adolescents more often. Exact etio-pathogenesis is poorly understood and diagnosis is made on symptoms based criteria.

Diagnosis of IBS should be suspected in children with constipation, when the pain does not resolve with resolution of the constipation (children in whom the pain resolves have functional constipation, not irritable bowel syndrome)
