Isoniazid (INH) prophylaxis is indicated in following scenarios

  • A child less than six years of age with an adult or adolescent contact with pulmonary tuberculosis. Adult/adolescent may or may not be sputum positive.
  • A neonate, whose mother has active tuberculosis (pulmonary or extra pulmonary). In cases where the mother had tuberculosis any point during pregnancy and was undergoing treatment during pregnancy prophylaxis is also indicated.
  • Children planned for any immunosuppressant therapy who are Mantoux positive, eg Nephrotic syndrome to be started on steroids and found to be Mx positive, a child with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis(JIA), who needs to be put on methotrexate and is Mantoux positive
  • Children with HIV and Mantoux positive.

The treating pediatrician should rule out active disease before starting the child on prophylaxis.

Dose Isoniazid 10 mg per kg per day.

Available as 100 mg dispersible tablet and 300 mg tablet
