For mild cases Paracetamol/ Naproxen/ Ibuprofen are best when taken at the onset of the headache. This helps to abort an episode of severe headache. Appropriate dose cane be given to the child to carry in school bag.

When migrainesare more frequent, say four or more episodesper month, they need daily medication. Flunarizine5-10mg HS--(available as tablets of 5 and 10 mg & Syrup in strengths 5mg/5ml) and Valproate10-20mg/kg/day(available as Tablet 200,300,500 & syp strengths -200mg/5ml) are some of the effective options. The aim of giving daily medications is to bring down the frequency of the headaches toatleast half. This goal can be achieved by using the medications for at least a 30-45 days before the medication is deemed ineffective and changed. Acute pain medications are important in all migraine headaches irrespective of frequency. In the long term parental understanding of migraine is important to bring about lifestyle changes-

  • Restricting screen time to 1hour/day
  • Good sleep hygiene
  • Increasing fluid intake
  • Avoiding triggers if identified.(bright lights, chocolates, packed foods)
