Drug withdrawal and avoidance is the main stay.

Eliciting drugs — Drugs most frequently associated with FDE include:

  • Antibiotics: trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, tetracyclines, penicillins, quinolones
  • NSAIDs, acetylsalicylic acid, ibuprofen, naproxen, mefenamic acid.
  • Paracetamol, Barbiturates, Antimalarials
  • Rare cases of FDE have been reported by levocetirizine also.

Acute lesions generally appear 30 minutes to 8 hours after drug administration, but can occur up to two weeks after drug exposure. After discontinuation of the offending drug, lesions resolve spontaneously in 7 to 10 days.

Symptomatic treatment — Relief of pruritus (using H1 antihistamines) & topical medium to high potency topical corticosteroids are applied two times per day for 7 to 10 days. For patients with generalized FDE systemic corticosteroids (eg, prednisone 0.5 to 1 mg/kg per day for three to five days) may be beneficial.
