Resuscitation (positive-pressure ventilation) of neonates greater than or equal to 35 weeks gestation should begin with 21% oxygen (room air). For neonates less than 35 weeks of gestation resuscitation begins with 21-30% oxygen.
Free-flow oxygen(5lit/min) is administered to babies with laboured breathing or when the baby is persistently cyanotic. And if oxygen saturation cannot be maintained with the target range despite 100% free flow oxygen, trial of CPAP can be considered(especially if preterm) and baby should be shifted to NICU.
Using the blender, adjust the oxygen concentration as needed to achieve the oxygen saturation target by pulse oximetry in above mentioned situations.
If chest compression is needed during resuscitation then ensure that the oxygen concentration is 100%.
