Newborn screening through pulse oximetry can improve detection of critical Congenital Heart Disease(CHD)in newborn babies who may not show signs of having a critical CHD. Pulse oximetry screening does not replace a complete history and physical examination, which sometimes can detect a critical CHD before oxygen levels in the blood become low.
The screening should be done no earlier than 24 hours after birth and prior to newborn being discharged from the hospital or birthing centre
