It is an inflammatory skin disease, commonly affecting the napkin area of infants.It is characterized by sharply demarcated salmon-coloured, scaly plaques that involve the groins. The scaling is greasy and yellow in colour with no Satellite Lesions.
It appears within the first 3 months of life.Infantile seborrheic dermatitis often begins with diffuse erythema and thick adherent greasy scales on the scalp. Other areas of involvement are primary flexural areas - neck, axilla, post auricular and umbilicus.The infants are asymptomatic, non pruritic, the rash settles on its own by 6-8months of age.
Oil application should be avoided.
Mild potency topical Steroids like Hydrocortisone 1% or Desonide can be used for short duration(5-7 days) for exacerbations
