Creatinine is a break-down product of muscles. Serum creatinine is the most common test used to assess renal function and is a good test for glomerular filtration (GFR) but its value varies significantly with age and creatinine levels may be normal despite loss of upto 70% of kidney function (GFR)


Creatinine values in different age groups


Cord blood

0.6 – 1.2 mg/dl

New born to 1 month

0.3 – 1.0 mg/dl

1 month to 1 year

0.2 – 0.4 mg/dl

1 yr to 12 years

0.3 – 0.7 mg/dl

12 years to 16 years

0.5 – 1.0 mg /dl

>16 years

0.6 – 1.2 mg/dl (Males)


0.5 – 1.1mg/dl (Females)

For Converting MG/100 ml or MG/dl or MG% to  µmol/L, multiply by 88.
