Rhinitis is a symptomatic disorder of the nose characterized by itching, nasal discharge, sneezing and nasal airway obstruction. IgE mediated symptoms occuring after exposure to an allergen are seen in allergic rhinitis.
While non-allergic rhinitis without eosinophilia, also named as vasomotor rhinitis, are due to vasodilation of nasal vasculature. The symptoms can occur intermittentely or continuously. Nasal itching is predominantly absent in vasomotor rhinitis.
Other causes of non-allergic rhinitis include stuctural problems like deviated nasal septum, high arched palate (Down syndrome), choanal stenosis, adenoidal hypertrophy and bacterial rhinitis.
Unilateral persistent nasal discharge in children should raise the possibility of foreign body in nose.
