About Author

Perineal rash in infants is basically a descriptive phenotype for multiple dermatoses that may affect the anogenital skin of an infant. It can range from very common dermatosis like primary irritant napkin dermatitis to rare diseases like Langerhans cell histiocytosis.

The commonly seen Perineal rashes in infancy are:

1.Primary Irritant contact dermatitis

2. Seborrheic Dermatitis

3. Candidial Dermatitis

4. Atopic Dermatitis

5. Streptococcal Perianal dermatitis

Editor's note: Most common reason seen in office practice is local irritation of the delicate skin by various practices like excess use of baby wipes, practice of putting talcum powder in perineal area, washing cloth nappies by Dettol, etc. Once the protective epidermis of skin is gone then all secondary causes/infections further worsen the rash.
